Decisions, decisions
It's almost official . . . I will soon be a teacher. After what seemed like an eternal waiting period, schools finally started contacting me about jobs. I hope I made a good choice. It was pretty easy ruling out one school; I didn't think I was a good fit there. However, the other two both seemed like great options. I was really intrigued by one, which seemed very progressive: year-round, no bells, student-led conferences, outdoor science learning area, to name a few. Yet I wasn't too keen on starting (gulp) next Friday. I mean, it would be nice to be getting a paycheck soon, but I was looking forward to having all summer to plan (& rest!) before jumping into my first job. Plus, the 45-minute commute wasn't exactly desirable, given my proclivity toward vehicle-induced narcolepsy. It will be hard saying no ~ everyone was so nice to me during interviews / tours, but such is life, I suppose.
Anyhoo . . . I'll soon be teaching 8th grade science in "one of the best schools in the district" (according to the AP), and I'll be close to schools where several other MATers will be working. My classroom is ginormous, the school is well-funded, and I'm already thinking of a fun discrepant event for the first day of school. Curiously, one of the teachers on my team has already pegged me as a technological genius (whatever), and indirectly assumed that I will be the one who will prepare the kids for their computer competencies. Ha! And all I did was say I used PowerPoint often during my student teaching. Smart move, I know. But how hard can it be, 8th grade computer skills? I'll soon find out. (I envision I'll be the one needing tutoring from my own students on at least one occasion.)
Somehow I let my sister talk me into a whirlwind trip to NY this weekend. I'm convinced she missed her calling & should've chosen a job in business, not medicine; marketing is what she does, all the time, quite naturally. Ah well. It'll be fun, especially since I'm not the one who has to get up & go back to work on Monday morning.
